Medical Transcription: What’s in it for you?

This is how my day went yesterday, which was a pretty typical day in the life of this MT.
Got up at 7:45, stumbled down the stairs. Let cat #2 out. Let cat #1 in. Let cat #2 in. Let cat #1 out.
Kissed husband, who was sprawled on the couch, basking in the warmth of the fire he had built in the wood stove. Every morning, like Tom Hanks in Cast Away, he beats his chest and tells me, “I have made you fire.” Gotta love him.
Breakfast in hand, I happily approached my desk at 8:00 sharp. While munching on my cereal, I whipped out a blank daily sheet and scrawled the date across the top, logged on and downloaded my morning files. I love this part of the day. Work waiting for me is a happy sight. No work waiting for me is also a happy sight. I can go either way. But 95% of the time, there is work waiting for me.
Let cat #1 in. Let cat #2 out. Kissed husband goodbye for the day. Tidied up the kitchen.
Poured a cup of tea. Let cat #1 out. Sat down to work and stayed put for a while, transcribing for Dr. Uh. Let cat #2 in. Sat back down and transcribed for 55 minutes straight for Dr. Heartthrob. Oh, Dr. Heartthrob, how that man can dictate.
Time for a break. Stood by the door and watched it rain. Let cat #2 out. Back to my desk, transcribed for Dr. Phlegm for way too long. Took a break. Watched it rain. Back to my desk, transcribed for Dr. Snippet. Let cat #2 in. Looked for cat #1. Transcribed a few more discharge summaries.
Lunch time. Ran out in the rain to see if the chickadees had moved into the bird house next to the garden gate. Put a Netflix movie in the mail box. Had an apple and peanut butter.
Back to my desk and, since it was raining and I knew the chickadees were happy and didn’t require my attention, I transcribed for several hours straight. I work best when it’s raining, which is great, because I happen to live in a rainy part of the country. Took another break, watched it rain. Transcribed for 45 minutes for Dr. Giggle. Lost track of where cat #1 and cat #2 were. Wherever they were, I knew they were curled up fast asleep, which sounded like a good idea to me.
