A Valentine’s Day to Remember

This past Saturday marked the most romantic days on the calendar, Valentine’s Day. The merchants use this holiday to make money by selling flowers, jewelry, candy and whatever else makes us swoon over the objection of our affection. The older I become the less meaning this day has for me. After several years of marriage and kids, I don’t feel the objection of anyone’s affection. Although the hubby never forgets and will do something for me to make me feel special.

My daughter is in middle school and they no longer have Valentines parties or exchange Valentine cards. She informed me that this was for kids not for middle school kids. My son is in elementary school and was excited by the Valentine’s party and exchanging cards. I was not aware of the significance of this day and did not get his Valentine’s cards until a couple of days before. I dragged him to the dollar store hoping that they still had a selection of cards that he would like. By this stage in the game, the Valentines’ stuff has been pushed to one bin at the front of the store. Lucky for me he found the cards he liked and we avoided a meltdown.

I was so involved in my online world that I never gave a thought to the big day. I informed my kids that I was working on the computer and could not be disturbed. They came downstairs a couple of days to see if I was still working. I gave them the nod without even missing a beat. Finally, my son could not contain his excitement. He said, mommy, I am sorry to disturb your work but I just wanted to give you a Valentine. He gave me a Valentine card and two of his favorite pieces of candy. I felt like the biggest jerk! My daughter later gave me a Valentine card which surprised me because she is more like me about occasions such as this. I had not bought them Valentine’s cards and felt pretty bad.

The most important thing to remember is that the little things make us all feel special. Next, year I will have something special planned for this most romantic day of the year!
