I teach medical terminology at a local community college. We get students of all ages, walks of life, and career aspirations. Not all of my students will end up as medical transcriptionists, medical office specialists, health care workers, or even in the medical field at all. I am not pessimistic, just realistic, as sometimes we don’t find our niche until after school and sometimes circumstances take us a different way. In any case, I try to give added value to my evening classes in a variety of ways. One of them is an occasional “public service announcement.” I keep my eyes and ears open for medical items of interest in the general geographic area of our school. It is amazing how much is offered to the public – hospitals give a variety of programs and lectures, physicians offices have open houses, informational meetings at libraries, job expos/career fairs. Some are specific to a disease or syndrome, some address insurance issues, some are screenings. Some articles of interest are about new medical equipment available in this area, hospital statistics, etc. If the students attend, they are getting the added bonus of absorbing more medical terminology and that makes them better students – we all win!
In any case, in the spirit of giving added value to this blog, I am proclaiming my first public service announcement … CBS Cares Colonoscopy Sweepstakes! I kid you not. This promotion began 2/20 and runs to 4/30.The winner will win a 4-day/3-night trip to New York City and a colonoscopy procedure; includes round-trip airfare (including a guest!), 3 nights in a hotel, a colonoscopy and $500 cash. Check out http://www.cbscares.tv/ for details of the official sweepstakes rules and the additional medical details. It even includes details of what exactly a colonoscopy entails!
I think this is a wonderful promotion, especially for people like me who tend to push off screenings in light of high deductibles or people who have no insurance at all. Perhaps some of you reading this blog fall into those categories. Take advantage of this opportunity … the odds of winning aren’t great, but what do you have to lose?
