How’s that New Year’s resolution coming along? Did you have one, several, or a long list as we welcomed 2009? According to experts, if you do something different for 21 days, it becomes a habit. Did that work for you? It’s been over 21 days since New Year’s so hopefully one, several, or all of your resolutions have taken you to better habits. If not, don’t fret. No time like the present! Who said you can only make resolutions one day of the year? Maybe the best resolution is to not make New Year’s resolutions per se but to take inventory at random times in the year and make an effort to be a better person wherever and whenever opportunity presents itself. This is not as easy as it sounds.

I find a lot of people’s resolutions are all about them … diet, financial, self-improvement, etc. How about making resolutions for others? What I mean to say is make a resolution that will enhance others’ lives. Being aware of how our mood meter affects others, how our listening skills may benefit others, what we can do to make both strangers and loved ones feel valued can all be good resolutions too. Our attitude at work, at home, at church–is there room for improvement there? Do other people see a negative person or a positive person when we interact with them? Do we encourage people or discourage? Do we make people feel invisible as we transact business? Would those encounters be better if we kept an awareness of others? Perhaps you already do all of these things (great!)–but most of us are a work in progress and could use a reminder!

I am making my “new” resolutions now to find ways to enhance other people’s lives. In the process, I bet I enhance my own. Either way, 21 days sounds like a worthwhile investment.
